Los Alamos National Laboratory Selects InfiniBand Technology for Next-Generation 10Gb/sec Cluster Mellanox Technologies Teams with Linux Networx to Provide 256-Node Linux Cluster to LANL SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA and YOKNEAM, ISRAEL, August 14, 2003 - Mellanox® Technologies Ltd., the leader in InfiniBandTM silicon, today announced that Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has selected Mellanox InfiniBand interconnect technology for a new 256-node high performance cluster. This cluster, being built by premier clustering solutions provider Linux Networx, will feature Mellanox InfiniScaleTM 96-port 10Gb/sec switches and InfiniHostTM dual port host channel adapters along with Evolocity® servers. Mellanox InfiniBand 10Gb/sec links are currently delivering record MPI performance of over 850 MB/sec of data throughput combined with superb latencies. The LANL cluster, named Orange, will become part of Los Alamos' Institutional Computing project and support many scientific research projects. Additional research with the cluster will include parallel scaling for operating systems and global files systems, along with a range of work aimed at getting the most efficient and effective performance out of high-performance clusters. The Mellanox InfiniBand products also support the cluster's capability to switch from 32- to 64-bit or from 64- to 32-bit processing mode. "The Orange system will expand Los Alamos' exploration of issues surrounding 64-bit open source operating systems and commodity processors in both computer and computational science," said Andy White, who leads Los Alamos' Institutional Computing project.
