IBM Acquires the Business of Unicorn Solutions, Inc.

ARMONK, NY, May 8, 2006 - - IBM today announced it has acquired the business of Unicorn Solutions, Inc., a privately held company based in New York. Financial details were not disclosed.

Unicorn develops software for metadata management. Metadata is information that is used to describe the characteristics of data, such as when and by whom it was created, accessed, modified, as well as how it is formatted. Companies use metadata to gain a better understanding of how they can most effectively use data in their business processes. For example, metadata is central to the efficient management of information in a service oriented architecture (SOA), where it enables the selection, invocation, management, reuse and governance of services in an SOA.

This technology will enhance IBM's Information Management software portfolio, accelerating delivery of next-generation metadata capabilities in its products.

Unicorn is the 18th IBM acquisition since 2001 in support of the company's efforts to help clients capture and integrate their data into business processes in order to grapple with challenging business demands such as globalization, security and government compliance mandates. IBM's approach combines the company's industry expertise with open standards, advanced storage systems and information management software to integrate, manage, secure and deliver information in a more seamless, real-time fashion across enterprises, regardless of the underlying format or structure.
